Bit Torrent Downloading:
Easy and FAST!
By Andy G.

An overview:

Bit Torrent (bt) downloading is one of the easiest ways I’ve found of downloading shows. In addition to being easy, it is also very fast when compared to other methods of downloading.

You can identify a bt file to be downloaded by its “.torrent” file extension (the very last part of the file name). Usually, the file name is pretty long and contains the band’s name, the date of the show, and the format in which the files will arrive, normally “.shn” or “.flac” (but more on that later).

Without getting too technical, the process goes like this:
• The first person to upload the show becomes the original seeder.
• Once the show is up, the people downloading it become the leechers.
• When a leecher has completed the download, they automatically become an additional seeder.

The beautiful part: The reason that this is so quick and easy is because, when you are leeching, you are getting your files from every active seed and leech. This means that you are getting your files from everyone participating in the download, not just the original seed. This is the reason why bt works better and goes faster when there are more people downloading.

The catch: The only trick here is that good bt etiquette asks that once you’ve finished your download, you leave your windowand be a seed for a while.

Why you should do this:

First of all, it’s so easy! Seriously, I had to get a bigger hard drive just to store all the stuff that can be downloaded this way.

Second, this is a highly efficient (and extremely cost-effective) way to spread the gospel of the LVJBS. When we upload a show, an e-mail is sent to an announce list (similar to our Yahoo Group), which is read by a very large segment of the online trading community. Every show we upload will have the LVJBS name and info on it, so…you get the picture.

Third, and most important, this is a super-easy way for all of us to get our very own copies of all the shows we do from now on. Once we get good at this, our shows should be available within a week’s time, and of course, you’ll be the first to know when they’re ready.

What you need:

To successfully download a bt file, all you need is one piece of bt software. If you search, you will find a number of variations of the original software, but I’ve found that the original works best for me. The latest version of this software, for both PC and Mac, can be found here:
http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/download.html

Once you have the software installed, all you need to do is click on any file or link with a “.torrent” extension, and the download will begin (you will be prompted to choose a location on your hard drive where you would like the files to be downloaded to). That’s it; you are now downloading the show! If, for any reason, you need to interrupt your download, you can restart it from the point you left off by clicking on the same link you used to start the original download and selecting the same download location on your computer.

NOTE: As stated above, the files you download will arrive compressed as either “.shn” or “.flac” files. You will need the appropriate software to decompress these files, if you don’t already have it.

For Shorten (.shn), software can be downloaded here:
PC: http://www.softsound.com/Shorten.html
Mac: http://www.hornig.net/shorten/

For Free Lossless Audio Codec (.flac), software can be found at:
PC and Mac: http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html

Both of these programs work in a very similar way. Basically, you willthe program and choose the files from your hard drive (the ones you just downloaded) that you want decompressed. When finished, you will have original quality files that are ready to be burned onto a CD or played on your computer’s media player.
